PHaEDRA will be at the Smithsonian Digitization Fair!

PHAEDRA has been accepted to the Smithsonian Digitization Fair! At our exhibit table, Wolbach librarians will be available to share information and developments in our efforts to digitize and transcribe astronomical logbooks from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The theme of this year’s Digitization Fair is “Bracing for Impact: Digitizing Collections to Change Lives!” Our ‘citizen science’ approach to this project, in which anyone interested can participate by exploring and utilizing the information, aligns with the Fair’s goals to explore how digitized and online collections can be used to cultivate civic engagement. And with the insight of other exhibits and presentations, our team can maximize accessibility and the impact of this digital collection.

This exciting opportunity comes as we begin the digitization phase of the project. Once our first batch of scanning is complete, we will enlist the help of the Smithsonian Digital Volunteers to transcribe images into a text-searchable format. Finally, these files will be hosted by our friends at the Astrophysics Data System, where searchers and researchers can find, read, and use this information to whatever end their imaginations direct.

The Digitization Fair will be held in Washington DC on March 14th and 15th. For those who are interested in these topics but unable to attend, a web-cast of the presentations will be available during the event.
