Photographic plate

This telescopic image of the Large Magellanic Cloud was produced on a photographic plate by Harvard Observatory at its station in Arequipa, Peru, on January 24, 1897. From there the plate was sent back to the Observatory in Cambridge so that the objects in the image could be inspected, classified and catalogued by the computers. Each individual notation made on the plate denotes a star, astronomical object or area of interest designated for possible further investigation.

  1. I think this field is of the southern sky and includes the LMC galaxy and Tarantula nebula on the right side of the image
