Edward Pickering became the fourth director of the Harvard Observatory in 1877 and established methods of standardization and automation which existed in factory work at that time. This included technical upgrades to equipment such as the automation of telescopes and the institution of astrophotographic techniques. He also sought to standardize a classification system of uniform stellar magnitudes. His trailblazing concept of systematically photographing and cataloguing the entire sky ultimately resulted in the discovery of many previously-unknown astronomical objects and the production of an immense body of published data thus helping to firmly establish the Harvard Observatory as one of the world’s premiere astronomical institutions.
